Project summary
A programmatic volume.
The combination of sharp lines and delicate “mousharabieh”, makes this Saudi palace a home for a modern family by reducing the gigantic scale (when needed) in a clear distinction between public and family functions.
In a climate where the sun is both gift and burden, shadow is the primary architectural material. This villa is organized as a system of sun-shading devices — screens, overhangs, deep loggias, planted pergolas — that filter the intense Gulf light before it reaches the inhabited spaces.
The architecture is defined by these elements as much as by its walls and floors; remove the shadow and the house loses its character. Each shading device is also a spatial threshold — a zone of habitation between full exposure and complete shelter.
It is a building designed from the outside in, beginning with climate and arriving at comfort.
